Church of Saint Mary of Grace (Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie)
The new Church of Saint Mary of Grace (Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie) was Padre Pio’s heartfelt response to the ever-growing influx of pilgrims drawn to San Giovanni Rotondo by faith and hope. Confronted with the increasing number of devotees seeking to attend Mass and receive the sacrament of confession, Padre Pio recognized the urgent need for a larger and more welcoming space. He dreamed of a sanctuary where people could find dignity, spirituality, and peace. Adjacent to the historic church and the convent, this sacred area took shape, seamlessly blending tradition and modernity to create a bridge between the past and present in an embrace of faith.
The first stone was laid on July 2, 1956, marking the start of construction on what would become a spiritual landmark. After three years of devoted effort, the new church opened for worship on July 1, 1959, revealing a structure that radiated both grandeur and grace. Its spacious and luminous three-nave layout welcomes the faithful into an atmosphere of solemnity and reverence, drawing them toward the heart of the sanctuary: the central nave. At the center of the main nave is a magnificent mosaic depicting the Saint Mary of Grace surrounded by the glory of angels. Radiating light and power, the image is a testament to Padre Pio’s profound Marian devotion. It serves as a focal point for prayer and reflection, inspiring awe and spiritual connection among visitors.
The side aisles of the church are equally rich in beauty and meaning. A wooden statue of the Saint Mary of Grace, a symbol of protection and intercession, watches over the faithful with an air of tenderness and serenity. Two additional mosaics capture the spirit of contemporary holiness, depicting Saint John Paul II and Mother Teresa of Calcutta. These iconic figures embody the values of faith, hope, and love for humanity that Padre Pio championed throughout his life. Beyond the artistry, the church houses sacred relics that enhance its spiritual significance. These relics provide pilgrims with an intimate way to approach God through the intercession of Padre Pio.
